OpenSocial Development is a set of common application programming interfaces (APIs) for web-based social network applications, developed by Google along with My Space and a number of other social networks. It was released November 1, 2007.
OpenSocial gives you an Environment to Develop Your own Application and Post on web. The open social application space is currently buzzing - Myspace, Bebo, Facebook, Orkut, Hi5 all with their own application platforms and some level of interaction with the open social platform.
OpenSocial Applications Based on HTML and JavaScript, as well as the Google Gadgets framework, OpenSocial includes APIs for social software applications to access data and core functions on participating social networks.
OpenSocial is commonly described as a more open cross-platform alternative to the Facebook Platform, a proprietary service of the popular social network service Facebook.
Google owned Orkut where you can upload your Application. Orkut is a very Popular Social Network where you increase popularity of your Application.
Setting up the basics:
If you're starting a new gadget, you should create a new XML file for it — call it mygadget.xml. Begin with the usual XML boilerplate, and include the social API. Something reflective of the purpose of the application (the samples will amend the version number to help you keep track of the iterations in this lab).
